What is a lung function test?

A lung function test assesses how well your lungs work. These tests are noninvasive and require no anesthetic or downtime. As soon as you’re finished, you can return to work and other activities right away.

What diseases can lung function tests diagnose?

Prudent MD uses lung function tests to diagnose various lung diseases, including:

  • Asthma
  • Allergies
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Damaged or scarred lung tissue
  • Thickened or enlarged airways
  • Hardening of your connective tissues (scleroderma)

You might also be a candidate for a lung function test if you smoke and are concerned about your risk of lung cancer.

What kinds of lung function tests are there?

Prudent MD offers several kinds of lung function tests, including:

Spirometry

Spirometry, a lung function test, measures two things –– how much air you exhale after a deep breath and how much air you can exhale in one second.

During the test, you blow into a pipe like device. The device connects to a computer that displays a graph. Your provider interprets the graph to determine your lung capacity.

What is recovery like after a lung function test?

After a lung function test, some may feel tired. Even so, you should be able to return to work and your other activities as soon as you’re done. If your results indicate a lung problem, your Prudent MD provider makes treatment recommendations.

If you experience breathing problems, request a lung function test at Prudent MD. To schedule an appointment, call the office today or book online.
